ABUJA, Nigeria—President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive inspector-general of police during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting after the Nigeria Police Council unanimously endorsed his appointment on Wednesday.

The swearing-in will take place at the State House, according to a statement issued Monday by the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The endorsement followed a council meeting presided over by Tinubu.

The meeting was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired DIG Hashimu Argungu. Also present were Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service Esther Walson-Jack.

According to Onanuga, Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised Disu’s record, particularly his tenure as commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos from 2015 to 2021, where he earned recognition for crime control efforts.

Nasarawa State Gov. Abdullahi Sule also commended the appointment, describing it as merit-based. Wike recalled Disu’s service in Rivers State as assistant commissioner of police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and the anti-kidnapping unit between 2014 and 2015, praising his professionalism.

Disu’s confirmation comes less than a week after Tinubu appointed him acting inspector-general following the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun. Egbetokun cited “family issues” in his resignation letter, though reports indicated he was asked to step down after disagreements with the president over matters including the withdrawal of police officers from VIP protection duties and opposition to state policing.

Disu, 59, was born April 13, 1966, in Lagos State and joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a cadet assistant superintendent of police. He holds qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship.

Before his elevation, he served as assistant inspector-general of police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

Like his predecessor, Disu served during Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. While Egbetokun was chief security officer to the governor, Disu served as aide-de-camp.
