The United States government has begun enforcing a new visa restriction policy targeting individuals accused of violating religious freedom in Nigeria, signaling a tougher stance on global human rights issues.

This development was confirmed by Mark Walker, the U.S. principal adviser for global religious freedom, who stated that the policy is already active and being implemented. According to him, individuals linked to religious persecution will now face heightened scrutiny when applying for entry into the United States.

Walker made the announcement in a post on 𝕏, stressing that the will prevent perpetrators of religious oppression from accessing its territory. He added that enforcement actions have already begun under the new framework.

Under the new measures, individuals believed to have “knowingly directed, authorized, funded, supported, or carried out violations of religious freedom” may be denied visas or subjected to additional vetting procedures. U.S. officials say the goal is to discourage human rights abuses and hold offenders accountable beyond their home countries.

“If you engage in persecution, you are not welcome in America,” Walker stated, emphasizing that the policy is part of broader efforts to safeguard religious liberty globally.

The visa restriction policy was originally announced in December by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who explained that it forms part of Washington’s response to alleged violence against religious groups, including Christians, in Nigeria and other regions.

Rubio noted that the restrictions would apply to individuals involved in supporting or enabling violations of religious freedom, reinforcing the United States’ commitment to human rights protection as a foreign policy priority.

The announcement followed a resolution introduced by U.S. House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa Chairman Chris Smith. The resolution recommended sanctions, including visa bans and asset freezes, against individuals and organizations accused of serious religious freedom violations in Nigeria.

Among the groups mentioned in the proposal were the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, which lawmakers alleged have been linked to incidents of religious violence. However, these claims remain politically sensitive and have sparked debate within and outside Nigeria.

Earlier in the year, some U.S. lawmakers also floated the idea of sanctions against Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State, alleging possible complicity in religious freedom violations. No formal action has been confirmed in his case.

Despite the policy rollout, Walker did not disclose the names of individuals currently affected by the visa restrictions, leaving uncertainty about the immediate targets of the enforcement.

Analysts say the move reflects growing international attention on religious freedom issues in Nigeria, as well as increasing willingness by the U.S. to use visa restrictions as a diplomatic tool. The policy also underscores Washington’s broader strategy of linking human rights concerns to immigration and foreign relations.

As implementation continues, attention is expected to remain focused on how the policy will affect diplomatic ties and accountability efforts between both countries.
