₦50m Scandal: Ondo Speaker Hit With Vote of No Confidence, Lawmakers Call EFCC
A fresh political crisis has erupted in the Ondo State House of Assembly as twelve lawmakers have jointly issued a Vote of No Confidence in the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji, accusing him of gross misconduct and financial mismanagement.
In a resolution, the aggrieved lawmakers cited Section 92(4)(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Assembly to remove a Speaker for actions deemed to undermine public trust or violate official duties.
The legislators alleged that the Speaker was involved in two major financial offences: the diversion of ₦50 million earmarked for a public hearing, and the misappropriation of the House’s monthly operational grants.
They said the alleged infractions breach multiple legal provisions, including Paragraph 9, Part I of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, which prohibits public officers from abusing their office; the Oath of Office in the Seventh Schedule; Section 19 of the ICPC Act (2000); and Section 390 of the Criminal Code dealing with theft by a public officer.
According to them, the actions amount to gross misconduct as defined under Section 188(11) of the Constitution, and have “gravely impaired” the integrity and smooth functioning of the Assembly.
Resolutions Adopted
The twelve lawmakers unanimously resolved to:
Pass a Vote of No Confidence on Speaker Olamide Oladiji; and
Call on the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate and prosecute the Speaker if necessary, including recovering any allegedly diverted funds.
