The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has said adequate funding is essential to providing the security and logistics required for the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections. Amupitan made the remarks on Wednesday in Owerri, Imo State, while delivering a goodwill message at the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers.

The INEC chairman said financial constraints could limit the ability of both the commission and security agencies to carry out their responsibilities, despite INEC’s funding being provided as a first-line charge on the Consolidated Revenue Fund.

He explained that effective elections require sufficient resources to deploy personnel and electoral materials across local government areas, wards and polling units, warning that inadequate logistics could undermine an election even where security agencies maintain peace.

Amupitan also highlighted the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), established following the 2011 general elections, as a key platform for coordinating election security at federal, state and local government levels.

He said the police remained the lead agency in election security and called for stronger intelligence gathering, professional neutrality and inter-agency cooperation ahead of 2027. According to him, delivering an effective electoral system requires the government and relevant authorities to provide the necessary resources.
