United States President Donald Trump has appointed his longtime adviser, Stephen Miller, as the new White House Chief of Staff, replacing Susie Wiles.

Trump announced the appointment on Friday, November 6, 2026, through a post on his Truth Social platform, saying Miller would assume the position on Monday, November 9.

The US President described Miller, who currently serves as Deputy Chief of Staff, as one of his most trusted advisers.

Trump Announces Miller’s Appointment

In his announcement, Trump expressed confidence in Miller’s ability to take over the influential White House position.

He wrote:

“I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026.

“Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation. I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff, she has done a great job!”

The appointment places Miller at the centre of the administration’s White House operations, giving him responsibility for coordinating the President’s executive office and managing its internal affairs.

Who Is Stephen Miller?

Miller has been a close political ally of Trump since the 2016 presidential campaign, when he worked as a speechwriter.

He later served as a senior policy adviser during Trump’s first administration, becoming one of the key figures responsible for developing the President’s immigration agenda.

Miller played a prominent role in shaping the administration’s hardline immigration policies, including the 2018 policy that resulted in the separation of thousands of migrant families at the US-Mexico border.

He returned to the White House in January 2025 as Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy and Homeland Security Adviser.

In that role, he became one of the administration’s influential figures on immigration, border security and domestic policy.

His appointment as Chief of Staff further strengthens his position within Trump’s inner circle.

Susie Wiles To Move To Trump’s Political Operation

Wiles, who became the first woman to serve as White House Chief of Staff in January 2025, is expected to move to Trump’s political operation following the leadership change.

The veteran political strategist played significant roles in Trump’s presidential campaigns, helping manage his 2016 and 2020 campaigns in Florida before overseeing his successful 2024 presidential campaign.

She was widely credited with bringing organisational discipline and structure to Trump’s campaign operations.

Trump praised her performance in the White House, describing her service as outstanding.

Although the President did not provide further details about her new responsibilities, his announcement confirmed that she would remain involved in his political activities.

Appointment Comes After Republican Midterm Setback

The leadership change comes days after the November 3, 2026, US midterm elections, in which Democrats reportedly won majorities in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The outcome represents a major political setback for Trump’s Republican Party and could complicate the administration’s legislative agenda during the remainder of its term.

With Democrats controlling both chambers of Congress, the administration is expected to face increased scrutiny and resistance over its policies.

Miller’s appointment therefore comes at a politically significant moment as Trump prepares to navigate a divided government and strengthen coordination within his administration.
