African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and former Labour Party spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has alleged that state governors are already mobilising huge financial resources to support President Bola Tinubu’s expected 2027 re-election campaign.

Okonkwo made the claim during an appearance on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande on Channels Television, where he criticised the performance of the Tinubu administration nearly three years after taking office.

According to the actor-turned-politician, politics has become the only sector currently thriving under the administration.

“This is the government of catastrophe. The only viable business is politics,” Okonkwo said.

He further alleged that governors were already setting aside about ₦800 billion to back Tinubu’s political ambitions ahead of the next general election.

“The governors are already budgeting ₦800 billion to support the campaign. That is the only industry that is blossoming under Tinubu because he does not want any contest in 2027,” he claimed.

Okonkwo also described the administration’s record as “three years of catastrophe,” blaming the government for worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and rising national debt.

While acknowledging that the government had implemented its borrowing plans as stated in the national budget, he argued that many of the administration’s promises to Nigerians remained unfulfilled.

“The only thing I can concede to President Tinubu is that in the budget, all the amounts he said he was going to borrow, he borrowed it. That is the only thing he fulfilled,” he stated.

Concerns Over Debt And Economy

The ADC chieftain questioned the government’s approach to debt sustainability, warning that relying mainly on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) figures without corresponding production growth could create future economic problems.

“A government that is not producing anything is now dubiously computing our debts based on GDP,” he said.

He argued that countries with weak production sectors should measure debt sustainability against revenue generation rather than GDP alone.

“Any country that is not a producing nation, you have to denominate your debt to your revenue because you will run into problems. Soon, you will be bankrupt,” he added.

Security Concerns

On insecurity, Okonkwo said Nigeria’s security situation had worsened significantly, describing the country as a “killing field.”

“Nigeria has become a killing field. You have 195 countries on earth, and Nigeria is the fourth most terrorised nation,” he claimed.

As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency and state governors had not officially responded to Okonkwo’s allegations.
