Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, has said Nigeria’s opposition parties have failed to present a credible alternative to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on TVC on Wednesday, Fashola argued that the opposition has focused more on calling for the removal of President Tinubu than presenting concrete policy proposals that would convince Nigerians they can govern more effectively.
According to the former minister, the 2027 elections should be decided on the basis of ideas and programmes rather than personalities or political sentiments.
“There is nothing exciting from the other side (opposition) other than those who want a change of government just wanting the president to go, but to what? What are you giving us instead?” Fashola said.
He maintained that opposition parties have yet to outline fresh policy initiatives capable of addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges or persuading voters that they offer a better path for the country.
Fashola said Nigerians deserve the opportunity to compare the programmes of political parties before making electoral decisions, stressing that elections should be a contest of ideas and practical solutions.
He noted that political parties and candidates should clearly state their positions on critical national issues, including taxation, security, infrastructure development and economic growth, to enable citizens to make informed choices at the polls.
The former governor added that he would have welcomed a political environment where competing parties present detailed policy alternatives, allowing Nigerians to evaluate their plans based on substance rather than rhetoric.
Reflecting on his years in public office, Fashola described the opportunity to serve as Governor of Lagos State and later as a minister in the Federal Government as the greatest honour of his life.
His remarks come as political parties continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with debates over governance, economic reforms and national security expected to dominate the political landscape in the months ahead.
