ADC Picks Amaechi as Atiku’s Running Mate for 2027 Presidential Race
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially announced former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The decision pairs Amaechi with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in what party leaders have described as a “unity and rescue ticket” aimed at offering Nigerians an alternative leadership option ahead of the next presidential election.
The announcement was made through a statement issued by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi. According to the party, Amaechi’s emergence followed extensive consultations involving party stakeholders, coalition partners, youth groups, women leaders, and representatives from across the country.
Party officials explained that the selection was influenced by Amaechi’s strong performance during the ADC presidential primaries, where he emerged as the runner-up. They also pointed to his extensive experience in public service and governance as major factors that contributed to his nomination.

The ADC highlighted Amaechi’s long record in public office as one of the strongest assets he brings to the ticket. Over the years, he has served in several strategic positions, giving him experience across different levels of government.
Amaechi first gained national attention as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, a role that made him one of the longest-serving legislative leaders in Nigeria’s democratic era. He later served two terms as Governor of Rivers State, where he oversaw projects in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and public sector reforms.
His political journey continued at the federal level when he was appointed Minister of Transportation. During his tenure, the ministry embarked on major rail modernization projects and transportation initiatives that attracted national attention.
According to the ADC, this broad experience across both legislative and executive responsibilities places Amaechi in a unique position to support the presidential ambitions of Atiku Abubakar.
The party further argued that Amaechi’s influence extends beyond his home region. His political network across the South-South and other parts of Southern Nigeria is expected to strengthen the party’s national reach and electoral appeal.
ADC leaders stated that the Atiku-Amaechi partnership represents more than a traditional political alliance. They described it as a strategic effort to bring together two experienced leaders with complementary strengths and a shared vision for national development.
The party believes that the ticket will appeal to Nigerians seeking solutions to economic hardship, unemployment, insecurity, and governance concerns. It also expressed confidence that the combination of Atiku’s national political experience and Amaechi’s administrative background would provide the leadership needed to drive reforms and restore public confidence.
In its statement, the ADC called on party members, coalition partners, civil society groups, women organizations, youth movements, and Nigerians across the country to support the new ticket. The party maintained that the announcement marks the beginning of a renewed effort to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous Nigeria.
As political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, the selection of Rotimi Amaechi as vice-presidential candidate signals ADC’s intention to position itself as a serious contender in the race for the nation’s highest office. The party remains optimistic that its newly unveiled ticket will inspire confidence among voters and strengthen its campaign for national leadership.
