Governorship

The governorship and political atmosphere in Oyo State is already stirring as the media aide to the Minister of Power, Bolaji Tunji, confidently declared that his principal, Adebayo Adelabu, possesses the vision and competence needed to transform the state if elected governor in 2027. This statement comes amid rising political discussions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) over Adelabu’s potential candidacy and its implications for the party’s future in the state.

In a recent statement, Tunji dismissed the concerns raised by former Minister of Communications Adebayo Shittu, who had suggested that the APC might face electoral setbacks if Adelabu emerges as the party’s flag bearer. Shittu’s remarks, which have sparked debate among political observers, were firmly countered by Tunji, who championed Adelabu as a leader of exceptional pedigree and competence.

Adelabu’s Capacity: A Standout Leader for Oyo State

Bolaji Tunji emphasized that Adebayo Adelabu is not merely a politician vying for office but a visionary leader whose accomplishments, especially in the energy sector, underscore his capacity to deliver transformative governance.

“Adelabu is not merely a candidate to be imposed,” Tunji stated. “He is a visionary leader whose brilliance, achievements, and pedigree make him a standout choice for any electoral contest.”

Citing his achievements as Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Tunji highlighted Adelabu’s commitment to revitalizing the energy sector. Under his leadership, Nigeria reportedly recorded a milestone power generation capacity of 6,003 megawatts within less than two years—an unprecedented leap in the nation’s electricity generation history. For comparison, it had taken over four decades for Nigeria to grow from 2,000 megawatts in the 1980s to an average of 4,000 megawatts by 2021.

Furthermore, Adelabu’s tenure also saw the country attain a record power evacuation capacity of 5,801 megawatts. These results, Tunji said, are not only indicative of Adelabu’s hands-on approach but also affirm his potential to lead Oyo State with similar effectiveness.

A Reform-Driven Leader Poised for Statewide Transformation

Tunji noted that beyond figures, Adelabu’s leadership style reflects a reform-driven, transparent, and pragmatic approach. He explained that the Minister had brought renewed energy into Nigeria’s power sector by enhancing transparency, driving renewable energy investments, and implementing grid stability reforms—efforts that have earned him commendation nationwide.

According to him, such a track record of achievements positions Adelabu as more than capable of steering Oyo State toward economic growth, infrastructural development, and public service reform. He insisted that opposition to Adelabu’s candidacy within the APC should not be based on outdated political calculations but on his ability to deliver results that benefit the people.

“Adelabu’s interest in Oyo State is rooted in his passion for development and good governance,” Tunji continued. “His achievements are a clear reflection of his potential to replicate such success stories at the state level.”

APC’s Unity and the 2027 Elections

While some stakeholders like Shittu have voiced concerns about internal disunity, Tunji expressed confidence that Adelabu’s candidacy would not harm the APC’s prospects in Oyo. Instead, he believes that the Minister’s credibility and achievements will inspire public trust and boost the party’s image as the 2027 elections approach.

Tunji called on party members to focus on merit and the broader interest of the state, rather than allowing political rivalry to derail a credible candidate’s chances. He urged unity within the APC and encouraged internal democratic processes that prioritize competence over personal bias.

“Adelabu is not only qualified but is also the kind of candidate who can bring innovation and integrity into governance,” he asserted. “The APC should rally behind such a strong contender who has already proven himself at the national level.”

Looking Ahead: Vision for Oyo

As the 2027 political race gradually takes shape, Adelabu’s anticipated governorship bid is likely to be one of the defining factors in Oyo State’s political discourse. Supporters argue that his experience in the financial and energy sectors, combined with his technocratic approach, could significantly elevate the quality of governance in the state.

Whether or not Adelabu secures the APC ticket, the conversation around his candidacy has already ignited important discussions about leadership quality, development priorities, and party unity.

For now, all eyes are on how the APC navigates its internal dynamics and how Adebayo Adelabu’s performance on the national stage might influence his political journey at home.
