Adeyeye on NAFDAC’s role: ‘We are here to protect Nigerians’

Mojisola Adeyeye, the director-general of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has denied any political meddling and reiterated that the agency’s continuous crackdown on illicit drugs is only for the sake of public health.

Adeyeye emphasized that NAFDAC is dedicated to its mission of protecting Nigerians from dangerous and fake medications while speaking during an official visit to Lagos on Saturday.
Her visit followed the agency’s seizure of sizable shipments of illegal medications, including fake GSK Ampiclox and Cocodamol, at the Idumota Open Drug Market in Lagos, according to NewsWORLD.

Additionally, officials found prohibited, expired, and unregistered medications, including restricted narcotics.

After examining the seized medications, Adeyeye insisted that NAFDAC’s actions were in line with its primary duty.

“We are defending lives. NAFDAC is carrying out its mandate exactly as it is supposed to. “This operation is not political,” she said.

Additionally, the NAFDAC DG disclosed that a number of market vendors are not properly registered with the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN).

Adeyeye claims that more than 1,000 NAFDAC employees are working to take expired, unlicensed, and counterfeit medications out of the market.

With recent comparable raids in Onitsha, Anambra State, and Aba, Abia State, NAFDAC has stepped up its enforcement efforts nationwide.

Authorities also closed the Onitsha Bridgehead Drug Market in a significant operation due to claims that it was selling illegal medications.
