Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele have described the composition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid as historic, saying it reflects a broad political alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The lawmakers spoke during Wednesday’s plenary as the Senate moved to suspend proceedings to enable members to attend the inauguration of the campaign council.

Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District, described the arrangement as a “rainbow coalition” bringing together politicians from different political parties. He identified Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as among those included in the council.

According to Bamidele, Soludo and Adeleke were appointed coordinators for their respective states, while Wike would oversee campaign activities in the FCT and Rivers State.

Akpabio said the council’s composition represented a significant development in Nigeria’s democratic journey since the return to civilian rule in 1999. He argued that involving politicians from different parties demonstrated a commitment to unity and collaboration beyond partisan divisions.

The Senate President expressed confidence that the arrangement could promote a campaign centred on ideas and national interests, while congratulating Tinubu, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and other political leaders involved. He added that the council’s composition suggested that national unity would be a central theme of Tinubu’s second-term bid.
