Fresh developments on Wednesday indicated that the palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, was preparing to make public a Supreme Court judgment that it claimed affirmed the monarch’s exclusive authority to confer Yoruba-wide chieftaincy titles. This move follows the expiration of a 48-hour ultimatum issued to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, in a growing controversy over traditional authority within Yorubaland.

According to reports, the Alaafin convened a series of meetings with palace chiefs in Oyo town to deliberate on the matter. The tension erupted earlier in the week when the Alaafin’s media aide, Bode Durojaiye, demanded that the Ooni revoke the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title recently bestowed on businessman Dotun Sanusi. The palace cited a Supreme Court pronouncement as its justification, insisting that the authority to issue such pan-Yoruba titles rested solely with the Alaafin.

Alaafin’s Ultimatum and the Growing Dispute

The Alaafin accused the Ooni of overstepping his traditional powers by conferring a title that carried the designation of “Yorubaland.” He stressed that the Ooni’s influence was limited to the former Oranmiyan Local Government Area, now divided into Ife Central, Ife North, and Ife South. With the ultimatum now expired, palace insiders disclosed that the monarch may unveil the Supreme Court judgment to reinforce his claim to paramount authority across the Yoruba nation.

This escalation has triggered heated discussions on social media, with many Nigerians speculating about the “consequences” hinted at by the Alaafin’s palace. While some commentators urged restraint, others insisted that the Ooni should not be seen to diminish the Alaafin’s historical role.

Adding weight to the debate, the Atóbaáse of Yorubaland, Babajide Agunbiade, released an open letter emphasizing the Alaafin’s political and historical supremacy among the Yoruba. Agunbiade argued that the Ooni’s spiritual significance could not override the Alaafin’s status as the paramount ruler of the Oyo Empire, whose influence historically spanned Yorubaland, Dahomey, Offa, and parts of present-day Kogi State.

 Authority in Yorubaland

In his letter, Agunbiade described the Ooni’s recent action as a deliberate attempt to undermine the Alaafin’s established role. He wrote that the prerogative of conferring Yoruba-wide titles was not merely a matter of tradition but had been reinforced through judicial pronouncements. According to him, the Supreme Court ruling validated the Alaafin’s role as the highest authority in Yoruba leadership, placing him in a position that transcended personal prestige to embody the preservation of cultural identity.

Agunbiade urged the Alaafin to consider legal action to reassert his authority and safeguard Yoruba traditions. He maintained that the Ooni, while highly revered as the spiritual custodian of Yoruba heritage, could not usurp the Alaafin’s political supremacy.

However, not everyone agreed with this position. Legal practitioner Pelumi Olajengbesi strongly contested the claim that any Supreme Court judgment vested exclusive pan-Yoruba authority in the Alaafin.

Legal Opinions and Historical Context

Olajengbesi argued that judicial decisions must be interpreted strictly within their contexts and that no ruling had ever declared the Alaafin as the sole custodian of Yoruba-wide chieftaincy authority. He explained that while the Alaafin held immense historical significance, the Ooni of Ife remained the ancestral father of the Yoruba nation, deriving legitimacy from Ile-Ife, the universally acknowledged cradle of Yoruba civilization.

He added that history and tradition had always placed Ile-Ife at the heart of Yoruba existence, with the Ooni serving as the spiritual head whose authority predated the Oyo Empire itself. According to Olajengbesi, the conferment of the Okanlomo of Oodua title on Dotun Sanusi was lawful, culturally appropriate, and symbolically unifying. He further argued that the Ooni’s role was not only legitimate but timeless, serving as a constant reminder of Yoruba unity despite the rise and fall of empires.

What Lies Ahead for Yoruba Traditional Leadership

The unfolding dispute between the Alaafin and the Ooni highlights a long-standing rivalry over the balance of power between political and spiritual leadership in Yoruba history. While the Ooni embodies the ancestral and spiritual roots of the Yoruba people, the Alaafin historically ruled the powerful Oyo Empire, which extended its influence across vast territories.

With the Alaafin’s palace preparing to unveil the purported Supreme Court judgment, the issue may soon take a legal and constitutional dimension. The outcome could redefine the boundaries of authority among Yoruba monarchs and influence how traditional titles are conferred in the future.

For now, Nigerians and Yoruba descendants worldwide are closely watching how the crisis unfolds. Many are calling for dialogue, urging the monarchs to safeguard unity rather than deepen division in a time when cultural cohesion is more vital than ever.

Whether through legal action, historical reaffirmation, or mutual understanding, the resolution of this dispute will shape not only the relationship between the Alaafin and the Ooni but also the future interpretation of authority within Yorubaland.
