The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has placed 20 public universities across Nigeria on strike alert and issued a 14-day ultimatum over what it described as the haphazard implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.

The union expressed dissatisfaction with the uneven application of the welfare package and conditions of service contained in the agreement, warning that continued delays could trigger fresh industrial actions across affected institutions.

ASUU said while some federal and state-owned universities have commenced implementation of the agreement, several others have failed to comply, creating disparities in the treatment of academic staff nationwide. According to the union, the selective implementation undermines the integrity of the agreement and threatens industrial harmony within the university system. It therefore urged the relevant authorities to immediately ensure full and uniform implementation across all affected institutions.

The union warned that if its demands are not met within the 14-day ultimatum, the affected universities could embark on strike action, further disrupting academic activities. ASUU called on the Federal Government and state governments to honour their commitments under the 2025 agreement to prevent another round of industrial unrest and safeguard stability in Nigeria’s public university system.
