Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), declaring support for the party’s 2027 presidential ticket featuring Peter Obi and Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Lawal was formally received by NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), who welcomed him on behalf of the party’s presidential candidates.

The former SGF had earlier left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) following disagreements with the party’s leadership. Lawal alleged that the ADC’s presidential primary was manipulated to favour former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Speaking after his defection, Lawal said he was convinced that the NDC represented Nigeria’s future, citing concerns over insecurity, hunger, ignorance and disease. He urged Nigerians who were concerned about the country’s situation to support the party and its presidential ticket.

Lawal also expressed optimism about the 2027 election, saying he looked forward to May 29, 2027, as a date to celebrate what he described as the fulfilment of the objective of installing Obi as president and Kwankwaso as vice president.

Welcoming him, Dickson described Lawal as an experienced politician, grassroots mobiliser and political activist. He said the party was pleased to have Lawal join its ranks and take up a leadership role.

Dickson further disclosed that Lawal would oversee NDC activities and campaigns in the North-East, while providing guidance and helping resolve issues affecting the party’s candidates and campaign structures in the region.
