BUA Group has announced plans to commence operations at its 200,000-barrel-per-day crude oil refinery in the first quarter of 2027, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s drive to boost domestic refining capacity.

The upcoming refinery is expected to strengthen the country’s downstream petroleum sector by increasing the local production of refined petroleum products, reducing dependence on fuel imports and improving energy security.

Once operational, the facility will produce key refined products, including Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products required to meet growing domestic demand.

The project forms part of BUA Group’s broader investment strategy aimed at supporting Nigeria’s industrialisation agenda, creating employment opportunities and contributing to economic growth.

Industry observers believe the refinery will complement existing refining capacity in the country, promote competition in the downstream market and help stabilise the supply of petroleum products.

The company expressed confidence that the project remains on schedule, with commercial operations expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
