The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured residents of Osun State that its new technology-driven system will make double or multiple voter registration impossible ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, gave the assurance on Thursday at the 9th edition of the Osun Online Publishers Association (OOPA) Media Parley, held in Osogbo.

The session, themed “INEC’s Preparation Towards Osun 2026 Governorship Election”, focused on the commission’s readiness for credible polls.

Dr. Agboke said INEC had taken steps to strengthen electoral integrity, stressing that every registration is subjected to technological checks that automatically flag duplicates.

On election offences, the REC disclosed that six offenders from the last general elections had been prosecuted, warning that anyone caught violating electoral laws in 2026 would face the full weight of justice.

He also noted that political parties presenting conflicting candidates would be strictly handled in line with constitutional provisions.

Describing vote buying as a major threat to democracy, Dr. Agboke said INEC was deploying stronger monitoring mechanisms and working with anti-graft agencies to curb the practice. He added that Osun’s success in online voter registration was the result of early sensitisation and grassroots mobilisation.

INECThe REC further urged young people to leverage their numbers to influence the electoral process, while reaffirming INEC’s commitment to the 35 percent affirmative action policy for women’s participation. He also assured inclusivity for Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs), real-time result uploads, and improved logistics for remote polling units.

Earlier, OOPA Chairman, Mukhtar Ajelogbon commended INEC for engaging the media, noting that the parley was designed to bridge the gap between the commission and the public.

He pledged that the association would continue to ensure accurate and unbiased reportage of the electoral process.

The session ended with an interactive exchange between journalists and the REC, who promised continuous stakeholder engagement until the 2026 governorship election is successfully delivered.
