Ebola: FG Projects December 7 Date to Declare Nigeria Outbreak-Free

The Federal Government has projected December 7, 2026, as a possible date for Nigeria to declare its Ebola outbreak over, provided no new confirmed or probable cases are detected and the required monitoring period is validated by health authorities.

Ondo Assembly Endorses Constitutional Amendment For State Police

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, disclosed this on Monday, October 26, following the medical evacuation of Nigeria’s index patient to Switzerland. He said the proposed date depends on the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) validating the required 42-day countdown.

FG Explains Condition for Ending Ebola Outbreak

In a statement posted on his X account, Pate said the government’s immediate priorities included monitoring identified contacts, investigating alerts and strengthening preparedness across healthcare facilities.

“If no further confirmed or probable cases are detected, Nigeria could progress towards declaring this outbreak over under WHO criteria, potentially as early as 7 December 2026,” the minister said.

He stressed that December 7 remains a provisional target rather than a confirmed date for the official declaration.

According to Pate, any new confirmed or probable case could affect the timeline and require the countdown to restart in accordance with WHO criteria.

NCDC Monitors 53 Contacts Linked to Patient

The development comes after the NCDC disclosed that 53 people linked to the index patient, including healthcare workers, had been identified for monitoring.

Contact tracing and surveillance are central to efforts to determine whether anyone exposed to the patient develops symptoms and to prevent further transmission.

Pate said the Federal Government was working with the Federal Capital Territory Administration, state health authorities and development partners to strengthen containment efforts.

He urged Nigerians to remain calm, cooperate with contact-tracing teams and rely on official updates from the NCDC and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Ebola Patient Evacuated to Switzerland

The confirmed case involves a woman who recently travelled to Uganda and subsequently developed symptoms after returning to Nigeria.

According to the information released by the health authorities, laboratory tests confirmed the infection on October 20, 2026. The case was identified in the Federal Capital Territory.

Pate confirmed that the woman was evacuated to Switzerland on October 26 alongside her husband for further medical care.

The minister said the patient was stable, conscious and showing clinical improvement at the time of evacuation. However, he cautioned that an improvement in her condition did not necessarily mean she was no longer infectious.

He added that strict safety measures and protocols had been implemented before the evacuation to reduce the risk of transmission.

Health Authorities Maintain Surveillance

The Federal Government said health teams would continue monitoring contacts, investigating suspected cases and strengthening infection prevention measures while the countdown period runs.

The projected date will depend on the absence of additional confirmed or probable cases and formal validation by the NCDC and WHO.

For now, the government has urged the public to follow official health guidance as surveillance and containment operations continue.
