Ebola: NCDC Says 2027 Election Postponement May Be Considered If Outbreak Spreads

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has said the possibility of postponing Nigeria’s 2027 general election could be considered if the ongoing Ebola outbreak spreads significantly, while stressing that there is currently no need for such a measure.

The Director-General of the NCDC, Dr Jide Idris, made the clarification during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the public health situation and the potential implications of a wider outbreak.

NCDC Says No Immediate Need to Postpone Election

Idris said health authorities hoped the outbreak would be contained without affecting the electoral timetable. However, he acknowledged that a significant deterioration in the situation could require the government to consider further measures.

“We hope the election will not be postponed but if the thing gets wide enough that might be considered, as at now there is no need for that,” he said.

The NCDC chief also warned against using public health emergencies for political purposes, insisting that disease-related concerns should not become political weapons.

He explained that Nigeria’s population movement and international travel made it necessary for health authorities to monitor the possibility of imported infections.

Nigeria Confirms Bundibugyo Ebola Case

Nigeria confirmed a case of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola virus disease in the Federal Capital Territory on October 20, 2026.

According to the information released by health authorities, the patient was a woman who had recently travelled to Uganda and returned to Nigeria on October 7. She subsequently developed symptoms, and laboratory testing confirmed the infection.

The case prompted increased surveillance, contact tracing and preparedness measures by health authorities.

The NCDC has reported that 53 people linked to the patient, including healthcare workers, were being monitored as part of efforts to identify possible additional infections and prevent further transmission.

FG Projects December 7 as Possible Outbreak-End Date

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, has said Nigeria could declare the outbreak over as early as December 7, 2026, if no further confirmed or probable cases emerge.

Pate said the proposed date depends on the NCDC and the World Health Organisation validating the required 42-day countdown under the applicable outbreak-ending criteria.

The minister made the announcement on October 26, following the medical evacuation of the index patient to Switzerland for further treatment.

He cautioned that the December 7 date remains provisional and could change if another confirmed or probable case is detected.

Election Decision Would Depend on Public Health Situation

Idris’s remarks indicate that any consideration of postponing the 2027 general election would depend on how the outbreak develops rather than the confirmation of a single case alone.

For now, the NCDC says there is no need to postpone the election. Health authorities are continuing surveillance, contact tracing and preparedness activities to contain the outbreak.

The December 7 target also remains conditional on the absence of additional cases and validation by the relevant health authorities.
