Edo Election Tribunal to Deliver Verdict Amid Confident Party Claims

The political atmosphere in Edo State is charged with anticipation as the Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal prepares to deliver its much-awaited judgment today, April 2, 2025. The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have both expressed unwavering confidence in securing victory, setting the stage for a decisive ruling.

The PDP, along with its candidate Asue Ighodalo, has challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s decision to declare Monday Okpebholo of the APC as the winner of the September 21, 2024, governorship election. The opposition party alleges that the election was marred by irregularities, making its case before the three-member tribunal led by Justice Wilfred Kpochi. After hearing arguments from all sides, the tribunal reserved its judgment on March 3, 2025, and is set to announce its verdict today.

APC Confident of Tribunal Victory

In an interview with Daily Trust in Benin City, the acting chairman of the APC in Edo State, Jarret Tenebe, expressed strong confidence that the ruling would favor the ruling party.

“We are confident of victory because we have a strong case, and our lawyers have done an excellent job,” Tenebe stated.

He emphasized that electoral challenges require compelling evidence and argued that the PDP had failed to substantiate its claims.

“If you challenge an election or allege irregularities, you must prove your case beyond a reasonable doubt, which the PDP failed to do,” he asserted.

According to Tenebe, the APC believes that the judgment will uphold Okpebholo’s victory, allowing the governor to continue delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State.

PDP Remains Optimistic, Believes in Tribunal’s Fairness

On the other side, the PDP has also voiced strong optimism about the tribunal’s ruling. Speaking to journalists, the Publicity Secretary of the PDP caretaker committee, Chris Nehikhare, maintained that the party had presented a well-documented case backed by substantial evidence.

“Our only wish is for the judges to be fair, transparent, and guided by the law. We trust that the verdict will reflect the evidence we tendered. We remain confident that we have done our part,” Nehikhare stated.

The PDP insists that the election process was flawed, and it is relying on its legal team’s arguments and presented documents to secure a favorable outcome.

The Tribunal’s Critical Role in Edo’s Political Future

The Edo Governorship Election Tribunal holds the power to validate or overturn Okpebholo’s electoral victory, making today’s judgment highly consequential. The ruling could have three key outcomes:

  1. Affirmation of Okpebholo’s victory: If the tribunal finds that the election was fair and credible, the APC will retain its mandate.
  2. Nullification of the election: If the tribunal rules that electoral irregularities were significant enough, it may order a fresh election.
  3. Declaration of Ighodalo as the rightful winner: If the court finds that PDP’s evidence proves widespread irregularities, it could overturn INEC’s decision and declare Ighodalo the winner.

Regardless of the outcome, the verdict is expected to reshape Edo’s political landscape and possibly set a precedent for future electoral cases in Nigeria.

Legal and Political Reactions Awaited

The tribunal’s judgment will undoubtedly generate swift reactions from political stakeholders, legal experts, and the general public. Both parties have their legal teams on standby, prepared to analyze the judgment and determine the next course of action.

If the ruling favors APC, the PDP is expected to appeal the decision, taking the case to the Court of Appeal and possibly the Supreme Court. Conversely, if the tribunal rules in favor of PDP, the APC is likely to challenge the decision at a higher judicial level.

INEC and Election Integrity in Focus

Beyond the tribunal ruling, the Edo governorship election dispute has once again raised concerns about Nigeria’s electoral process. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has faced scrutiny over the conduct of elections, transmission of results, and handling of electoral disputes.

Observers and political analysts are closely watching INEC’s response to today’s ruling, as the commission plays a pivotal role in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.

Citizens Await Final Verdict

As Edo residents and political stakeholders await the final judgment, tension remains high. The ruling will not only shape the state’s governance for the next four years but also influence political strategies ahead of future elections.

For now, both the APC and PDP remain confident, but only the tribunal’s ruling will determine the final outcome.
