Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has credited the judiciary with playing a critical role in his political survival during the 2023 impeachment attempt against him. He described the judiciary as the “last hope of the common man” and emphasized the importance of the rule of law in preserving democracy.

Aiyedatiwa made these remarks on Wednesday in Abuja at the Body of Benchers’ maiden annual lecture and the public presentation of a report on legal ethics and disciplinary actions. The report, titled “Half-A-Century of the Body of Benchers: The Past, the Present, and the Future of Maintaining the Ethics of the Legal Profession in Nigeria,” explored the evolution of ethical standards within Nigeria’s legal system.

The governor acknowledged that divine intervention and legal protection were key to his survival during the political crisis that nearly led to his impeachment.

In 2023, while serving as acting governor of Ondo State during the medical leave of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, Aiyedatiwa faced impeachment proceedings initiated by the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly.

The Assembly accused Aiyedatiwa of gross misconduct and requested that the state’s Chief Judge form a seven-member panel to investigate the allegations. This process was in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution regarding impeachment proceedings.

However, the Chief Judge of Ondo State intervened, citing an ex parte order issued by an Abuja court on September 26, 2023, which temporarily halted any further impeachment action. As a result, on October 16, 2023, Assembly spokesperson Olatunji Oshati confirmed that the impeachment process would remain suspended until the court order was lifted.

Following Akeredolu’s passing in December 2023, Aiyedatiwa officially became the governor of Ondo State.
