Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and continue praying for the country, stressing that those sponsoring terrorism, violence and other criminal activities must be exposed and defeated.

Akpabio made the appeal during an inter-denominational church service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration. The event, themed God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams, brought together senior government officials, church leaders and worshippers to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and national challenges.

According to a statement released by his media office, the Senate President reflected on his experience as governor of Akwa Ibom State nearly two decades ago, when he introduced monthly prayer sessions in response to rising cases of militancy, kidnapping and violent attacks in the state.

Akpabio said prayer played a major role in navigating those security challenges and remains essential as Nigeria continues to battle terrorism, banditry and insecurity across several regions.

“When I had the opportunity to serve as governor about 19 years ago, I started monthly prayer,” he said. “I used to ask myself a question whenever there was militancy, kidnapping and killing. I would say, what if we were not praying?”

He urged Nigerians to continue seeking divine intervention so that those behind insecurity — regardless of their status or political affiliation — can be identified and brought to justice.

The Senate President emphasized that evil perpetrators and their sponsors must not escape accountability. “We must continue praying so that the evil doers and their sponsors shall be exposed in Jesus Name,” he declared.

“If they are in government, they shall be exposed. If they are outside government, they shall be exposed in Jesus Name. Those sponsoring it, whether it is politically motivated or not, may they never have peace until they are defeated,” Akpabio added.

Speaking further on Nigeria’s democratic history, Akpabio noted that the country has survived numerous crises over the years, including political instability, insurgency, economic hardship and public health emergencies. He said the nation’s resilience and ability to remain united through difficult periods demonstrate its strength and determination.

The Democracy Day church service formed part of nationwide activities commemorating 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria since the return to civilian rule in 1999.

Government officials at the event also reiterated calls for national unity, peace and collective responsibility as the country continues efforts to address insecurity and strengthen democratic institutions.
