According to Ogungbe, the petition was submitted to the IGP on April 14, 2026, and was received at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.
The lawyer said the petition raised concerns arising from the earlier investigation and requested a fresh examination of the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Matter Forwarded to Lagos Police Command
Following the petition, the Inspector-General approved the request and directed that the matter be forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command for further action.
The case was subsequently assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau, who are expected to conduct the fresh investigation.
Ogungbe said a representative of the Aloba family had already been invited by the new investigative team and had commenced engagement with the officers handling the case.
The latest development means investigators will revisit issues surrounding the circumstances of Mohbad’s death, although the specific scope and findings of the fresh investigation will depend on the police inquiry.
Mohbad Died in September 2023
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27.
His death generated widespread public concern and prompted investigations by the police and other authorities into the circumstances surrounding his final hours.
The fresh investigation follows the family’s petition to the Inspector-General and the subsequent decision to refer the matter to the Lagos State Police Command.
The police are expected to determine the relevant facts and circumstances through the new investigative process.
