President Bola Tinubu has declared that Nigeria is entering a critical new phase in its national struggle—one centered on confronting insecurity. Speaking during an Eid-el-Fitr gathering in Lagos, the president emphasized that safeguarding citizens will remain at the forefront of his administration’s agenda.

The high-level meeting, held at his Lagos residence, brought together Vice President Kashim Shettima and over 20 state governors. The gathering served as both a festive occasion and a strategic discussion platform on national challenges, particularly the rising threat of insecurity.
Tinubu made it clear that his government is intensifying efforts to combat criminal activities, describing insecurity as a major barrier to development, economic progress, and national prosperity. He stressed that the issue requires collective responsibility and unified action from all levels of government.

Highlighting recent diplomatic engagements, President Tinubu revealed that security cooperation was a key topic during his visit to the United Kingdom. He disclosed that discussions focused on acquiring modern equipment and strengthening international partnerships to enhance Nigeria’s security capabilities.
The President also confirmed ongoing collaboration with Emmanuel Macron, noting that France has shown willingness to support Nigeria with advanced security equipment and technical assistance. According to him, efforts are also underway to engage other nations in similar partnerships.
“Insecurity is an enemy of development,” Tinubu stated, adding that his administration is committed to leveraging global alliances to tackle the issue effectively. He assured attendees that proactive steps are being taken to secure the country and ensure peace across all regions.

Beyond security, the president addressed the economic implications of global tensions, particularly the Middle East crisis. He warned that the situation could drive inflation higher, affecting citizens’ purchasing power and increasing pressure on government resources.
Tinubu urged state governors to take proactive measures to protect vulnerable populations, emphasizing the need for social support systems to cushion the economic impact. He also encouraged them to remain resilient and committed to policies that directly improve the lives of their constituents.
The president called for stronger collaboration between federal and state governments, urging leaders to provide incentives that would ease the burden of rising energy and transportation costs. He also reiterated the importance of addressing criminal activities decisively, describing them as a form of “tyranny” that must be overcome.
During the meeting, the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, commended the President for his interventions and leadership. He acknowledged the significance of Tinubu’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as a milestone in strengthening bilateral relations.
AbdulRazaq also highlighted ongoing discussions around the establishment of state police, noting that the Nigerian Governors Forum is working with security agencies to develop a legislative framework. The proposal is expected to be presented to the National Assembly for consideration.
The gathering concluded with a shared commitment among federal and state leaders to confront insecurity head-on. With new international partnerships, policy initiatives, and collaborative efforts, Nigeria appears poised to take decisive steps in addressing one of its most pressing challenges.
As the country navigates this new phase, the effectiveness of these strategies will likely shape not only national security but also economic stability and public confidence in governance.
