Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has declared that the state is prepared to establish a state police force once the necessary constitutional framework is in place, describing the proposed security arrangement as a major step towards strengthening public safety and protecting lives and property.

The governor made the declaration on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Ante Chamber of the Government House in Kano. His remarks were contained in a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

Yusuf said the proposed state police would complement the operations of the Nigeria Police Force rather than compete with it, stressing that both institutions would share the responsibility of maintaining law and order across the state.

“The proposed State Police will complement, not compete with, the Nigeria Police Force. Both institutions share the responsibility of protecting lives and property and maintaining law and order,” the governor said.

He emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among security agencies, noting that improved cooperation would enhance intelligence gathering, boost rapid response to security threats and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement.

According to Yusuf, Kano State already possesses the institutional capacity, human resources and political will required to establish and sustain a state police system once the constitutional and legal requirements are fulfilled.

“Kano State has the institutional capacity, human resources, and political will to establish and sustain State Police when the necessary constitutional frameworks are in place,” he stated.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture and creating a safer environment for citizens.

Speaking on the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking, Yusuf described the initiative as part of the state’s strategy to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse and illicit drug trafficking through coordinated action among security agencies and relevant stakeholders.

He urged members of the task force to carry out their responsibilities with professionalism, discipline and integrity, stressing that no single agency could successfully combat drug-related crimes alone.

“The fight against drug abuse requires sustained commitment, professionalism, and effective inter-agency cooperation,” Yusuf said.

The governor added that enhanced collaboration among security institutions remains essential to addressing both drug-related crimes and broader security challenges confronting the state.
