King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the traditional ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom and once recognised as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 34 after an illness.

The Tooro Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, announced the monarch’s death on Thursday, describing it as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family, the people of Tooro and Uganda.

“This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and the nation of Uganda. I call upon all the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this profoundly difficult time,” Rwomiire said.

King Oyo ascended the throne in 1995 at the age of three, following the sudden death of his father, King Olimi III. His accession made him the youngest reigning monarch in the world, a record that drew international attention to the Ugandan kingdom.

Because of his young age, the kingdom was initially administered by a regency that included his mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa. Oyo formally assumed his royal responsibilities and was crowned at the age of 18.

Cause of Death Not Disclosed

The Tooro Kingdom has not officially disclosed the cause of King Oyo’s death. However, Ugandan government officials were quoted by local media as saying the monarch had been critically ill and had travelled to the United States for medical treatment.

Despite his relatively young age, Oyo was widely respected for his cultural leadership and his involvement in social causes. He championed initiatives focused on youth empowerment, education, environmental conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness.

Although Uganda operates a republican system headed by an elected president and parliament, the country retains several traditional kingdoms. The monarchs have no formal political authority but continue to wield significant cultural and traditional influence.

Tooro, founded in the early 19th century, is one of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms, with Oyo serving as its 13th monarch.

Crown Succession Assured

Although King Oyo was not officially married, the Tooro Kingdom said the succession of the Crown is assured.

“The continuity of the Crown is assured. His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom,” the Prime Minister said.

Tributes have since poured in from other traditional institutions in Uganda. The Buganda Kingdom expressed condolences to the people of Tooro and described Oyo as a valuable figure in Uganda, while lowering flags at its palace to half-mast.

The Rwenzururu Kingdom also extended condolences to the royal family and everyone mourning the monarch.

The Tooro Kingdom said further details concerning funeral arrangements and the official mourning period would be announced later.
