A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party aligned with Seyi Makinde has postponed several important party meetings, signaling a move toward reconciliation amid an ongoing internal crisis.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the party’s National Secretary, Taofeek Arapaja, who confirmed that the meetings of the National Caucus, the Board of Trustees (BoT), and the National Executive Committee (NEC) will not hold as previously scheduled.

According to Arapaja, the decision was approved by the party’s Board of Trustees and follows legal advice encouraging members to pursue an out-of-court settlement regarding disputes within the party.
The development comes at a time when the opposition party continues to grapple with internal disagreements that have raised concerns about unity and stability ahead of future political activities.

In the official statement, Arapaja explained that the postponement was taken in good faith and in the broader interest of restoring unity within the party.
He noted that the move is part of efforts to support reconciliation among members and to comply with guidance from the judiciary.
“In furtherance of the decision of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, in pursuit of reconciliation within the party, we announce the postponement of the meetings of the National Caucus, Board of Trustees, and National Executive Committee of our party earlier scheduled for this week until further notice,” the statement read.
The party leadership said the decision aims to demonstrate its commitment to the court-advised reconciliation process.
Arapaja also apologized to party members and stakeholders who may have been inconvenienced by the sudden change in schedule.
Political observers say the postponement could create space for dialogue among the party’s factions, which have been locked in disagreements over leadership and internal party decisions.
Court Encourages Amicable Settlement
The decision follows a development at the Court of Appeal Nigeria, sitting in Ibadan, where a case involving the PDP and its Ibadan elective convention was brought before a panel of justices.
During the hearing, the appellate court adjourned the matter indefinitely and encouraged all parties involved to pursue an amicable resolution outside the courtroom.
The court also granted the parties the opportunity to settle the dispute through dialogue rather than prolonged litigation.
According to the ruling, if the involved parties fail to reach an agreement through reconciliation, they remain free to return to court for further legal proceedings.
The justices also advised legal representatives of the parties to provide appropriate guidance to their clients in order to help achieve a peaceful settlement.
Implications for Party Unity
The PDP has experienced internal tensions in recent months, with different factions expressing varying positions on leadership issues and party direction.
Analysts believe the court’s recommendation for an out-of-court settlement and the subsequent postponement of key meetings could create an opportunity for party leaders to resolve their differences.
Reconciliation efforts may be crucial for the PDP as it seeks to strengthen internal cohesion and maintain its position as one of Nigeria’s major political parties.
While it remains unclear when the postponed meetings will be rescheduled, party officials say discussions aimed at restoring unity are expected to continue.
For now, the decision to delay the caucus, BoT, and NEC meetings represents a strategic pause as the PDP leadership works toward resolving internal disputes and rebuilding consensus within the party.
