In a rare but decisive move, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has slammed a six-month flight ban on Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, widely known as Kwam 1, following what the agency described as unruly behavior at the domestic terminal of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

This disciplinary action, made public on Thursday, August 7, 2025, was confirmed by NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, during a press conference. The agency’s decision has since sparked widespread conversation across Nigeria’s aviation and entertainment sectors.

Kwam 1’s Conduct Triggers Aviation Sanction

Michael Achimugu did not mince words as he announced the blacklisting of the Fuji icon, emphasizing that aviation rules must be obeyed by all individuals, irrespective of their celebrity status or political affiliations.

“As we speak, the passenger is going to be blacklisted for the next six months flying in Nigeria. Everybody involved in this will be brought to book,” Achimugu stated firmly.

He further noted that the NCAA is taking additional steps by notifying the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police, with the intent of initiating legal proceedings against Kwam 1.

Achimugu also shut down speculation that the musician’s well-known ties to President Bola Tinubu could offer him immunity. “The President, as well as the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, are committed to the rule of law. No individual, regardless of status, is exempt from due process,” he said.

Flight Chaos: Alcohol Controversy and Crew Suspension

The incident, which took place earlier in the week on August 5, reportedly began when Kwam 1 attempted to board a ValueJet flight while carrying an unidentified liquid in a flask. Aviation security officers and the flight captain repeatedly warned him about the item, yet he allegedly proceeded to board.

According to a statement issued by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the contents of the flask were eventually spilled on a security officer during a verification check. After testing, it was confirmed to be alcohol—strictly prohibited on Nigerian commercial flights.

The in-flight disruption caused by the incident reportedly escalated tensions aboard the aircraft, prompting further delays. Kwam 1 was also seen sipping from the flask onboard, prompting intervention from a flight attendant concerned about the potential consumption of alcohol mid-flight.

In the aftermath of the commotion, the NCAA uncovered a disturbing breach of aviation protocol involving the flight crew. Investigations revealed that the pilots of the ValueJet aircraft initiated departure procedures without first obtaining the required pre-departure clearance.

“This violation posed significant risks to both ground personnel and passengers. As such, the two pilots have been suspended pending a comprehensive safety review,” Achimugu confirmed.

Public Backlash and Denial by Kwam 1

In response to the unfolding drama, Kwam 1 issued a public statement denying all allegations of misconduct. According to him, the situation was “exaggerated and misleading” and based on a misunderstanding.

“I did not consume alcohol, nor did I defy aviation rules. The substance in the flask was plain drinking water given to me at the airport lounge while I was waiting to board,” the singer clarified.

Supporters of the artist have echoed his defense, suggesting that the entire incident may have been blown out of proportion due to his celebrity status. Others, however, have argued that his actions, whether intentional or not, breached aviation protocols and must be addressed seriously to prevent future occurrences.

Zero Tolerance for Aviation Misconduct

This is not the first time Nigeria’s aviation authority has had to discipline prominent individuals, but the scale and publicity of this incident underscore the NCAA’s renewed focus on enforcing discipline across all ranks of air travel.

Aviation analysts have praised the swift response, calling it a vital step in affirming safety and accountability in the Nigerian airspace. “No one should be above the law when it comes to air safety,” noted Captain Seyi Banjo, a retired pilot and aviation consultant. “The moment you allow exceptions based on fame or influence, you compromise the entire system.”

Aviation safety regulations in Nigeria, in line with global standards, strictly prohibit the carriage and consumption of alcoholic beverages not served by the airline. Passengers are also required to comply with all instructions issued by airline crew and aviation security officials.

What Happens Next for Kwam 1?

As the six-month blacklist takes effect, Kwam 1 is barred from boarding any commercial flights within Nigerian airspace until February 2026. In addition, pending the decision from the Attorney-General and Inspector-General of Police, the artist could also face criminal or civil charges under aviation and public conduct laws.

While the singer maintains his innocence, the NCAA insists that the rule of law must take its course. Achimugu concluded the press briefing by reiterating that disciplinary actions such as these are not meant to humiliate but to maintain the sanctity of Nigeria’s aviation space.

“The skies must remain safe for all. That means everyone—VIP or not—must obey the same rules,” he emphasized.

As investigations continue, all eyes remain on both the aviation authorities and Kwam 1, with stakeholders hoping the incident will serve as a lasting reminder of the importance of responsible behavior while flying.
