Nigeria has been placed on high alert following the latest Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said it has activated precautionary measures and enhanced surveillance to prevent the spread of the disease into Nigeria. The agency said the measures followed a dynamic risk assessment and consultations with public health experts and the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

As part of the measures, the NCDC said travellers arriving in Nigeria from countries with active or relevant EVD transmission will be subject to enhanced surveillance and required to complete a Health Declaration Form. The agency urged Nigerians to remain vigilant for symptoms associated with Ebola and advised anyone who develops symptoms to promptly seek medical attention while providing relevant information about travel history or possible exposure. The NCDC said the measures would be reviewed as the epidemiological situation changes.

Meanwhile, data from the DRC as of September 20, 2026, showed 7,672 confirmed EVD cases and 3,699 deaths, with 886 patients in isolation. The latest cases were recorded across Ituri, North Kivu, Haut-Uélé and Tshopo provinces, while 1,879 people infected with the Bundibugyo virus had reportedly recovered. The DRC also reported that 79.9 per cent of identified contacts in affected provinces were under follow-up as health authorities continued efforts to contain the outbreak.
