The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has warned students against applying for education loans they do not need, stressing that the scheme is voluntary and designed to assist eligible Nigerians who cannot afford the cost of higher education.
The fund said students who can comfortably pay their tuition fees and other educational expenses without financial assistance are not obligated to apply for the loans.

NELFUND disclosed this in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday and signed by its Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.
According to the fund, the student loan scheme was established to ensure that financial difficulties do not prevent qualified Nigerians from accessing tertiary education.
It explained that making the loans compulsory for all students, regardless of their financial circumstances, would undermine the programme’s primary objective of supporting those who genuinely need financial assistance.
“The student loan scheme is a support mechanism, not an obligation,” the fund stated.
NELFUND also clarified that although the loans are interest-free, beneficiaries are required to repay them in accordance with the provisions of the Student Loans Act.
It therefore advised prospective applicants to carefully understand the terms and conditions of the facility before submitting their applications to avoid difficulties with repayment in the future.
The fund further urged tertiary institutions, student leaders and other stakeholders to provide accurate information about the scheme and guide students who genuinely require financial assistance through the application process.
NELFUND reiterated that its primary objective is to ensure that no eligible Nigerian student is denied access to higher education simply because of an inability to meet the financial demands of their studies.
The warning comes as the federal government’s student loan programme continues to provide financial support intended to improve access to tertiary education across the country.
