ABUJA — The Federal Workers Forum has called on the Federal Government to increase the national minimum wage from ₦70,000 to ₦300,000, citing the rising cost of living and what it described as inadequate implementation of the 2024 wage increase.

The demand was contained in a letter dated September 2, 2026, addressed to President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, the Chief Justice of Nigeria and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

The letter was signed by the National Coordinator of the forum, Andrew Emelieze, and the General Secretary, Ogundele Ayodele, and forwarded to the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives through the Clerk of the National Assembly.

The workers also proposed a new salary structure under which the highest federal civil service salary would rise to ₦1.5 million monthly for Level 17 Step 1 officers.

According to the forum, the proposed review has become necessary because existing salaries no longer adequately reflect the economic realities facing federal workers across the country.

The group further alleged that the ₦70,000 minimum wage approved in 2024 has not been fully implemented for federal civil servants. It claimed that consequential adjustments and some allowances expected to accompany the wage review remain outstanding.

The forum noted that the 2024 wage increase raised the national minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000 but alleged that workers across various salary levels effectively received only an additional ₦40,000 rather than adjustments that fully reflected the new wage structure.

Under the proposed salary scale, Level 1 Step 1 workers would earn ₦300,000 monthly, while Level 2 would receive ₦330,000 and Level 3 ₦360,000.

The proposal places Level 4 at ₦390,000, Level 5 at ₦420,000, Level 6 at ₦450,000 and Level 7 at ₦480,000.

Level 8 workers would earn ₦510,000, while Level 9 would receive ₦550,000. The proposed salary for Level 10 is ₦600,000, while Level 12 would earn ₦700,000 monthly.

The proposed structure further places Level 13 at ₦750,000, Level 14 at ₦800,000, Level 15 at ₦1 million and Level 16 at ₦1.2 million.

At the top of the proposed structure, Level 17 Step 1 officers would earn ₦1.5 million monthly.

The Federal Workers Forum said the proposed salary review would help cushion the impact of inflation and improve the welfare and purchasing power of federal civil servants.

The demand comes amid continuing calls from organised labour and workers’ groups for government to review wages in line with the rising cost of living and economic conditions in Nigeria.
