Amoxicillin has not been banned in Nigeria, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has clarified, dismissing widespread rumours suggesting otherwise.

In a statement released on Monday, the agency assured healthcare providers, pharmacists, and the general public that the widely used antibiotic remains approved, safe, and available for medical use across the country.

NAFDAC explained that amoxicillin continues to be an essential medication for treating bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, ear infections, urinary tract infections, and typhoid fever. The agency warned that false information about a supposed ban could cause unnecessary panic and disrupt access to needed treatment.

The regulatory body urged Nigerians to disregard unverified reports circulating on social media and to obtain medicines only from licensed pharmacies and health facilities. It also encouraged the public to consult qualified healthcare professionals before using antibiotics to prevent misuse and antimicrobial resistance.

NAFDAC reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the safety and quality of medicines in the Nigerian market and promised to promptly inform the public of any regulatory changes when necessary.
