Afrobeats star says he has no plans to enter politics under the current electoral system, alleges lack of transparency discourages credible candidates.

Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has declared that he would win any election in Nigeria if the country’s electoral process were free, fair and transparent.

Naija News reports that the award-winning singer made the assertion during a livestream with comedian Carter Efe while discussing politics, governance and the possibility of contesting for public office in the future.

During the conversation, Carter Efe asked the music star whether he would consider running for the governorship of a state. Responding, Davido said he currently has no interest in seeking elective office because he lacks confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process, which he alleged is often manipulated.

According to the singer, he would not be willing to participate in an election where the outcome is predetermined or where victory could be taken away through unfair practices.

“Where in Nigeria do they allow elections to speak for themselves? I don’t have time for all that. I’m not someone you can cheat in an election and expect me to go home quietly. If you cheat me, I will do something about it,” he said.

Davido explained that his immediate focus remains his music career, adding that he would only consider venturing into politics when the country’s electoral system becomes more transparent and credible.

He expressed confidence that he enjoys widespread support across the country and insisted that no opponent would defeat him in a genuinely free and fair election.

“I’ll just continue doing my music until there’s transparency. Then I can think about politics because nobody can beat me in any election, ever.

“If there’s a free and fair election and everybody in Nigeria votes, I’ll win.”

When Carter Efe jokingly suggested that he should contest for the presidency, Davido maintained that he would emerge victorious if Nigerians were allowed to freely choose their leaders without interference.

The singer also lamented what he described as the lack of trust in Nigeria’s electoral system, arguing that many qualified individuals are discouraged from seeking public office because election outcomes are sometimes perceived to be manipulated rather than reflecting the genuine wishes of voters.

“But because of the system, there’s no transparency; they write results. We are waiting to see what they will do in Osun,” Davido added.

The musician further disclosed that he is closely monitoring political developments ahead of the forthcoming Osun State governorship election, saying the conduct of the poll would be watched with keen interest.
