An X user, Israel Gharee, had claimed that OPay was no longer using phone numbers as account numbers and urged customers to visit OPay agents for an update.
However, an OPay official, who spoke anonymously to Premium Times, described the claim as inaccurate. The official said customers would be notified through OPay’s official communication channels if there were any major changes to the company’s account system.
“I have seen the tweet. But even from the comments, you will see people are already correcting him. If we have any update or news, we will always share through our communication channels,” the official said.
The clarification comes weeks after OPay also reassured customers that its services would continue uninterrupted following a viral report claiming that the fintech company planned to shut down its operations from September 1, 2026.
Customers have therefore been advised to rely on OPay’s official communication channels for information concerning their accounts and services rather than unverified social media claims.
