Opposition parties in Nigeria are weighing the possibility of boycotting the 2027 general elections, citing alleged bias by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and claims that the political space is being manipulated in favour of President Bola Tinubu. The proposal is being pushed by the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and African Action Congress (AAC) leader, Omoyele Sowore, who argue that participating in a compromised electoral process would only legitimize it.

Speaking with Sunday Punch, PDP faction spokesperson Ini Ememobong accused INEC and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of weakening opposition parties through actions such as internal interference and controversial decisions, including issues surrounding ADC leadership recognition. He warned that planned electoral activities like voter register clean-up and party monitoring could be used to sideline opposition groups, stressing that parties must consider “unconventional but legal strategies,” including a boycott, if fairness is not guaranteed.

Echoing similar concerns, Sowore questioned the value of participating in an election that may lack credibility, urging opposition parties to begin serious discussions on withdrawal. Meanwhile, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) acknowledged the concerns but stated that any decision on a boycott would rest with its leadership. Despite the tension, the party expressed confidence in its chances, even as debates intensify over the credibility of the 2027 electoral process.
