Members of the National and State Assembly elected on the platform of the Accord Party in Osun State have alleged that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming governorship election, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, and leaders of the party are plotting to orchestrate widespread violence across the state ahead of the August 15 governorship poll.

Addressing journalists on Friday in Osogbo, the Accord National and State Assembly Caucus, comprising six members of the National Assembly and 25 members of the Osun State House of Assembly, claimed it had received credible intelligence indicating plans by the APC to escalate political violence in the state.

The caucus alleged that the planned attacks would target members and supporters of the Accord Party, disrupt campaign activities, and create an atmosphere of insecurity capable of undermining the electoral process.

According to the lawmakers, the alleged plot includes attacks on individuals identified with the Accord Party, destruction of campaign materials, vehicles, and other properties belonging to prominent party leaders and political office holders.

The legislators further claimed that the ultimate objective of the alleged violence was to create conditions that could lead to the declaration of a state of emergency in Osun State before the governorship election.

“The objective, according to information available to us, is to create a state of chaos and insecurity that could be used as a pretext to pressure the Federal Government into declaring a state of emergency in Osun State and subsequently appointing an administrator ahead of the governorship election,” the caucus stated.

The lawmakers said the allegations were based on intelligence reports and should not be dismissed as political speculation, urging security agencies to take proactive measures to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

They also alleged that a prominent APC chieftain from Osun East Senatorial District recently boasted before some traditional rulers that the party was determined to secure power in the state “by all means possible.”

The caucus accused the APC of resorting to violence due to what it described as growing concerns over the party’s electoral prospects in the state.

Condemning recent incidents of political violence, the lawmakers cited the killing of an Accord member, Mr. Kolade Eluyera, in Irewole Local Government Area and the shooting of the Accord Chairman in Osogbo Local Government, Hon. Asimiyu Ajibola, on June 3, 2026.

According to them, Ajibola remains hospitalized after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds.

The lawmakers also alleged that several Accord supporters were attacked in Ile-Ife, Owode-Ede and Osogbo for wearing party-branded caps, describing the incidents as part of a disturbing trend of politically motivated violence in the state.

The caucus expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Osun State Police Command, accusing the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Gothan, of failing to address the security challenges confronting the state.

They alleged that the police had not made arrests in connection with several reported attacks despite the availability of evidence, including video recordings and identifiable vehicles allegedly used in the incidents.

The lawmakers further claimed that the Commissioner of Police had repeatedly failed to attend meetings of the State Security Council since assuming office in May 2025 and accused him of attempting to weaken the operations of the Osun Amotekun Corps.

Describing the police commissioner as partisan and compromised, the caucus called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Disu, to immediately redeploy him from Osun State.

Among other demands, the lawmakers called for the arrest and prosecution of individuals linked to attacks against Accord members and supporters, particularly those recorded within the last three months.

They also urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to direct security agencies operating in Osun State to maintain neutrality, professionalism, and zero tolerance for political violence before, during, and after the governorship election.

The caucus appealed to civil society organisations, the media, the National Peace Committee, election observers, and the international community to closely monitor developments in Osun State as the election approaches.

As of the time of filing this report, the APC had not responded to the allegations.
