President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly held a closed-door meeting with aggrieved leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Osun State, urging them to put aside internal differences and unite behind the party’s governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), ahead of the August 15 election.

Among those said to have attended the meeting were prominent APC leaders, including Wale Afolabi, Shuaib Oyedokun, Poju Odusola and Bode Olanipekun, alongside dozens of former lawmakers and party stakeholders. According to sources, about 76 party leaders participated in what was described as a frank and extensive discussion on the state of the APC in Osun.

One of the former lawmakers who attended the meeting said it gave party leaders the opportunity to present their concerns directly to the President.

“We were around 76 in number at the meeting. It was an opportunity for the President to know the truth about what is happening in Osun State,” the source said.

The source alleged that many federal appointments allocated to Osun State had gone largely to associates of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and former Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola.

“We told the President the truth, that the majority of us, the APC leaders, don’t know how the party is being run,” the source added.

Another participant disclosed that President Tinubu appealed to the aggrieved members not to allow internal disagreements to undermine the APC’s chances in the forthcoming governorship election.

According to the source, the President reminded the leaders that any electoral defeat would affect the entire party rather than any particular faction, stressing the need for unity and collective responsibility.

Tinubu was also said to have expressed disappointment over the APC’s defeat in the 2022 Osun governorship election and the party’s performance during the 2023 general elections in the state.

One source quoted the President as urging party leaders to put aside their grievances and “work for the victory of the party.”

Another attendee said concerns were raised over whether an APC administration in Osun would be inclusive if Oyebamiji wins the governorship election.

According to the source, Tinubu assured the leaders that opportunities existed at both the state and federal levels and appealed to all party stakeholders to close ranks and support the APC candidate.

Efforts to obtain a reaction from the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, were unsuccessful, as telephone calls and text messages sent to him were not returned.

However, the Osun APC Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Olabisi, confirmed that the meeting took place.

“Yes, I am aware. That is all I can say,” Olabisi stated.

Other party sources also confirmed that Basiru played a key role in coordinating the meeting as part of ongoing efforts to reconcile aggrieved members and strengthen party unity ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election.
