Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has responded to Afrobeats star David Adeleke (Davido) over his appeal for a peaceful governorship election in Osun State, saying he is not an electorate in the state and will not be voting in the August 15 poll. In a statement issued on Thursday by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media, Oguwike Nwachuku, the governor also distanced himself from comments made by his aide, Ambrose Nwogwugwu, insisting that the remarks were made without his authorisation and did not represent his official position.

Uzodimma described Davido as “his son” and explained that his presence in Osun was strictly in his capacity as Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Chairman of the APC Osun State Governorship Campaign Council, where he is leading efforts to mobilise support for the party’s candidate, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji. He stressed that campaigning for a political party outside one’s state is a normal feature of democracy and clarified that his involvement in the election was limited to supporting the APC’s campaign, not participating as a voter.

The governor urged Davido, Osun residents and the general public to disregard Nwogwugwu’s earlier description of the singer’s appeal as “emotional blackmail,” maintaining that the aide had merely expressed a personal opinion. Uzodimma reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to peaceful, free, fair and credible elections, stating that there was nothing undemocratic about canvassing support for the party’s candidate. He also assured Davido that his participation in the Osun governorship election would remain within the bounds of democratic political engagement while reiterating his respect for both the singer and the people of Osun State.
