The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially revised the campaign timetable for the upcoming Osun State governorship election, setting August 13, 2026, as the new deadline for political campaigns.
The electoral body explained that the adjustment follows its earlier decision to shift the election date from August 8 to August 15, 2026. This change, according to INEC, necessitated a corresponding update to the campaign schedule to ensure compliance with electoral laws.
In a statement released on Thursday, National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Mohammed Haruna, recalled that the commission had previously issued a revised timetable on February 26, 2026. The updated schedule forms part of broader preparations for the 2027 general elections, which include the Osun governorship poll.
Haruna emphasized that, in line with Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, all political campaigns must end 24 hours before election day. As a result, the new campaign deadline has been fixed at midnight on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The commission urged political parties, candidates, and other stakeholders to strictly adhere to the revised timeline. It stressed that compliance is essential to maintaining order and fairness throughout the electoral process.
INEC also reiterated its commitment to delivering elections that are free, fair, credible, and inclusive. The commission noted that timely adjustments and clear communication of schedules are part of its strategy to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system.
Observers say the shift in both the election date and campaign deadline reflects INEC’s efforts to ensure better logistical planning and coordination. With preparations underway, political parties are expected to intensify their campaigns within the newly defined timeframe.
As the countdown to the Osun governorship election continues, attention will remain on how stakeholders adapt to the revised schedule and uphold the principles of a transparent democratic process.
