Police Fired Tear Gas At Us On Way To Osun, Says Sowore

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that officers of the Nigeria Police Force fired tear gas at him and his supporters while they were travelling to Osogbo, Osun State, ahead of Saturday’s governorship election. Sowore made the claim in a post on his verified X account on Wednesday, alleging that the incident occurred shortly after his group had a peaceful conversation with the officers.

According to Sowore, the officers allegedly launched the tear gas attack despite the cordial interaction. He said the action failed to stop his team from reaching Osogbo, adding that security personnel deployed for the election should focus on protecting citizens and ensuring a credible electoral process rather than intimidating them. As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not publicly responded to the allegation.

Meanwhile, Sowore has also accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of secretly maintaining fuel and currency subsidies. Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show, he argued that while the government claimed to have removed fuel subsidies, it continued to subsidise the naira and provide benefits to wealthy individuals through customs waivers and other incentives. He questioned the government’s transparency on subsidy policies and maintained that subsidies should be targeted at supporting ordinary Nigerians rather than the wealthy.
