Oyo State Tertiary Institution Workers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid Minimum Wage
Academic Activities Halted as JAC Demands Salary Implementation
Workers across five tertiary institutions owned by the Oyo State Government have commenced an indefinite strike over the non-payment of minimum wage and salary increments.
The affected institutions include:
- The Polytechnic, Ibadan
- The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki
- Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa
- Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora
- Oyo State College of Education, Lanlate
The strike, declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) on Monday, has led to the closure of entrance gates in the affected institutions, disrupting academic activities, including ongoing first-semester examinations at The Polytechnic, Ibadan.

Why the Workers Are Striking
JAC, which represents about 15 staff unions, stated that the industrial action became necessary after the state government and management of the institutions failed to implement the approved 25/35 percent salary increase and the new minimum wage for polytechnic and college of education workers.
“This decision was reached after extensive deliberations and consultations among the unions, following the inability of the management of the affected institutions to address the longstanding issues,” the statement read.
According to JAC, their counterparts in other educational institutions have been receiving the salary increment since January 2024, but workers in Oyo State polytechnics and colleges of education have been left out.
Students and Staff Affected as Crisis Deepens
The strike has halted academic activities, leaving students stranded and uncertain about the completion of their academic sessions.
With the gates of these institutions shut, staff and students await the government’s response to the workers’ demands.
As tensions rise, stakeholders have urged the Oyo State Government to intervene promptly and prevent further disruptions in the tertiary education sector.
