The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared Oladipupo Adebutu as its consensus governorship candidate in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general election.

Adebutu, who flew the party’s flag in the 2023 governorship election, emerged through a consensus arrangement during the PDP primary held in Abeokuta on Sunday.

Party members across the 236 wards in Ogun State had earlier participated in an affirmation process leading to his emergence as the party’s standard bearer.

The Chairman of the Ogun State PDP Governorship Primary Panel, Afolabi Ariyo, officially announced Adebutu as the winner through a voice vote.

“I, Afolabi Ariyo, Chairman of the Ogun State Peoples Democratic Party Governorship Primary Panel, hereby declare that Hon. Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu is the winner and is returned as the consensus candidate,” Ariyo stated.

Fayose Backs Adebutu

The primary attracted several PDP leaders from across the country, including former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose.

Speaking during the event, Fayose congratulated Adebutu and party members, describing the turnout as a sign of renewed hope for the PDP in Ogun State.

“What we saw outside this hall simply portends hope. Hope that reflects the readiness of the people to put Ladi Adebutu in the office of the Governor of Ogun State,” Fayose said.

He added that Adebutu’s political future was now firmly tied to the governorship race.

“After today, Ladi Adebutu can only be Governor. He cannot be Deputy Governor. He cannot be Senator. He cannot be Councillor,” he declared.

Adebutu Promises Victory In 2027

In his acceptance speech, Adebutu thanked party leaders, executives, and members for endorsing him unanimously.

“History has once again been made today with my emergence as the consensus governorship candidate of our great party under a united PDP,” he said.

The former governorship candidate expressed confidence that the PDP would reclaim power in Ogun State in 2027.

He also revisited the 2023 election, insisting that the PDP won the poll but was denied victory.

“However, this time in 2027, I believe in God that your votes will count and will put me in office as your duly elected Governor,” Adebutu stated.

Call For Unity

Adebutu urged party members to remain united and peaceful ahead of the election, stressing that internal stability would be crucial to defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He accused the APC administration in Ogun State of failing to maximize the state’s human and natural resources after more than a decade in power.

“Our collective responsibility now should be focused on returning our party to the seat of power in Oke-Mosan in order to rescue our people from suffering and maladministration,” he said.

Earlier, Ogun State PDP Chairman, Abayomi Tella, said the successful conduct of the primary demonstrated that the party had moved beyond its internal disputes and was now focused on winning the 2027 governorship election.
