The Federal Government’s expenditure on security-related projects and operations increased significantly in the first four months of 2026, even as violent crimes, kidnappings and attacks continued to affect many parts of the country.

Official records obtained from the Open Treasury Portal indicate that the government spent ₦57.78 billion on various security initiatives between January and April 2026. The figure represents a sharp increase compared to the ₦25.35 billion spent during the same period in 2025.

The spending covered a wide range of security activities, including the procurement of defence equipment, construction of military and police facilities, rehabilitation of security infrastructure and operational support for security agencies.

Despite the increased allocation, security challenges remain widespread across the country. Reports from law enforcement agencies revealed that dozens of violent incidents were recorded within a single week, raising fresh concerns about the effectiveness of ongoing interventions.

Analysis of the expenditure shows that defence equipment procurement accounted for the largest portion of the spending. More than ₦21 billion was directed toward acquiring military hardware and related equipment, while billions more were allocated to security infrastructure projects.

Additional funds were spent on the construction and maintenance of military barracks, police stations and other defence facilities. Security services and operational activities also received allocations during the review period.

However, budget implementation data suggests that only a small percentage of the total security allocation for 2026 has been utilized so far. Out of the approved ₦4.66 trillion security budget, just over one percent had been spent by the end of April.

Some key programmes also recorded little or no expenditure despite having budgetary provisions. Observers say this slow pace of implementation may be limiting the impact of government efforts to strengthen national security.

Meanwhile, criminal activities continue to pose serious challenges in several regions of the country. Security reports indicate that homicide cases, kidnappings, bandit attacks and armed robberies remain frequent occurrences.

Recent incidents in northern states have highlighted the persistence of organized criminal groups operating in rural communities and along major transportation routes. Cases of mass abduction and attacks on travellers have continued to generate concern among residents and stakeholders.

Security experts have expressed differing opinions regarding the rising expenditure. Some analysts argue that increased funding alone cannot guarantee improved security outcomes without effective implementation and accountability.

Others note that the military and security agencies are facing multiple threats simultaneously, placing enormous pressure on available resources and personnel.

Experts also point to broader structural issues such as poverty, unemployment, corruption and weak governance as factors contributing to insecurity. According to them, addressing these root causes is essential for achieving long-term stability.

There are also concerns about border security and regional instability within the Sahel, which analysts believe continue to influence criminal activities across Nigeria.

As debates continue over the best approach to tackling insecurity, many stakeholders insist that government spending must be matched by measurable results on the ground. Citizens, they argue, expect improved safety, stronger intelligence gathering and more effective responses to emerging threats.

With violent incidents still occurring across several states, attention is likely to remain focused on how security funds are utilized and whether current strategies can deliver the desired outcomes in the months ahead.
