The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) will meet today to select three members from the Lagos West Senatorial District to succeed Hon. Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, marking a new phase in the current leadership crisis in the Lagos House of Assembly. According to sources who spoke to Western Post, the APC leadership was not pleased with Hon. Mojisola Meranda’s election as Speaker.
Citing accusations of fraud and haughtiness, 32 of the 40-member Assembly voted to oust Obasa on January 13 and appointed Meranda as Speaker.

However, Western Post affirmed that Obasa’s removal is still definitive and irrevocable, defying previous reports that suggested he would be reinstated. Meranda is anticipated to resign as Speaker and return to her prior role as Deputy Speaker under the new setup. According to reports, in order to preserve regional balance, the GAC is looking to choose a new Speaker from the Lagos West Senatorial District, where Obasa was born. Eight ranking legislators from Lagos West are currently in the running for the job:
Hon. Setonji David (Badagry 2)
Hon. Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaye 1)
Hon. Kehinde Joseph (Alimosho 1)
Hon. Richard Kasunmu (Ikeja 2)
Hon. Lukmon Olumoh (Ajeromi-Ifelodun 1)
Hon. Age Sulaimon (Amuwo-Odofin 2)
Hon. Surajudeen Tijani (Ojo 2)
Hon. Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 2)
From these eight lawmakers, the GAC is expected to nominate three, one of whom will be elected as the new Speaker.
