The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has summoned the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Shamseldeen Ogunjimi, to appear before it over his repeated failure to respond to the panel’s invitations.

The committee, chaired by Bamidele Salam, directed Ogunjimi to appear in person on Monday, July 13, 2026, to address issues relating to the committee’s ongoing oversight responsibilities.

The directive was issued during the committee’s sitting on Tuesday, where lawmakers expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as the accountant-general’s continued lack of cooperation.

Members of the committee said the Office of the Accountant-General had repeatedly failed to provide critical documents required for legislative oversight despite several official requests.

According to the lawmakers, multiple letters sent to the office over the past few months were either ignored or received inadequate responses, slowing the committee’s work.

Committee Chairman Bamidele Salam described the conduct as inconsistent with the responsibilities of the nation’s chief accounting officer.

He stressed that the Office of the Accountant-General occupies a central position in Nigeria’s public financial management system and is expected to maintain full cooperation with the National Assembly.

Salam further warned that no public institution or government official is exempt from accountability under the law.

In addition to the summons issued to the Accountant-General, the committee also handed final invitations to six ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) whose accounting officers have repeatedly failed to appear before the panel.

The affected institutions are the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), the Federal Cooperative College, Ibadan, the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN), the Federal Ministry of Education, the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, and the Federal Ministry of Police Affairs.

The committee directed the accounting officers and permanent secretaries of the affected institutions to appear before it on Monday, July 13, 2026.

Salam warned that the committee would not hesitate to invoke its constitutional and legislative powers against any public official or institution that failed to comply with its directives.

The Public Accounts Committee is responsible for examining the use of public funds and ensuring transparency, accountability and compliance with financial regulations across government institutions.
