Senate Rejects Nigeria Air Revival, Demands Direct Flights to China for Nigerian Airlines

The Nigerian Senate has rejected calls for the revival of the proposed Nigeria Air project, urging the Federal Government to prioritise the development of local airlines and secure direct flight operations between Nigeria and China.

The lawmakers called on the Federal Government to renegotiate and enforce Nigeria’s Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with China to enable Nigerian airlines to operate direct flights to the Asian country.

The Senate’s position underscores the need to strengthen Nigeria’s domestic aviation industry, improve the competitiveness of local carriers and ensure that Nigerian airlines benefit from international air service agreements.

The lawmakers also stressed the importance of protecting the interests of indigenous airlines and creating opportunities for them to expand their operations into major international markets.

The proposed direct flight arrangement with China is expected to provide Nigerian carriers with greater access to the Asian market, while potentially improving trade, business and tourism relations between both countries.
