The Senate is considering a formal review of comments made by Senator Adams Oshiomhole concerning the controversial suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, following growing concerns among lawmakers over the implications of his remarks.

Sources within the National Assembly indicated that the issue could feature prominently when senators reconvene for an emergency plenary session scheduled for Tuesday.

The development follows public comments by Oshiomhole suggesting that the signatures of some senators were improperly attached to, or appeared on, the report that recommended Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension. Although the former Edo State governor later clarified his position, insisting he never alleged that any signatures were forged, the controversy has continued to generate debate within the Senate.

According to sources familiar with discussions among lawmakers, several senior senators are dissatisfied with the controversy generated by Oshiomhole’s statements and are pushing for the upper chamber to take an official stance on the matter.

One source disclosed that the emergency plenary session called by Senate President Godswill Akpabio may provide lawmakers with an opportunity to address the allegations and determine whether any further action is necessary.

The source alleged that the decision to reconvene the Senate before the end of its recess may offer a platform for discussions beyond the officially stated agenda.

However, there has been no official confirmation from the Senate leadership that Oshiomhole’s comments will form part of deliberations during the session.

Senate spokesperson, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, nevertheless indicated that allegations capable of undermining the credibility of Senate proceedings would not be ignored.

Speaking on the issue, Adaramodu said the Senate would carefully examine the comments and decide on an appropriate response.

“We are going to review any statements made by him. The Senate will take a cursory look at either extraneous, spontaneous or intentional comments from any senator appropriately,” he stated.

He further emphasized that the Senate has always conducted its business transparently and in accordance with established procedures.

According to Adaramodu, decisions on legislative and disciplinary matters are taken openly during plenary sessions after extensive debate among lawmakers.

The Senate spokesman rejected suggestions that any senator’s signature may have been forged or improperly represented during the process that led to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension.

“We are going to look into it. We will take a stand, and everyone will know where we stand. Such an allegation is spurious, bewildering and unthinkable,” he said.

He added that no senator had formally complained that his or her signature was forged during the consideration of the suspension report or any other Senate proceeding.

“The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria does not believe that a senator can raise such an uncharitable allegation,” Adaramodu noted.

He also urged members of the public to treat the claims with caution pending the Senate’s review.

The controversy surrounding Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension has remained a subject of public and political debate since the disciplinary action was announced. With lawmakers expected to return for the emergency session, attention is now focused on whether the Senate will formally investigate the matter and what position it will ultimately adopt regarding Oshiomhole’s remarks.
