Nigeria’s Senate has announced plans to temporarily suspend its plenary sessions later this week, allowing lawmakers to participate in their respective political party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The decision was disclosed during Tuesday’s sitting by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who noted that many senators would soon return to their constituencies to take part in candidate nomination processes. According to him, the anticipated drop in attendance made it necessary to pause full legislative proceedings.

Akpabio explained that while plenary sessions would be suspended, Senate committees would continue their responsibilities to ensure that legislative work is not completely halted during the period.
