Abuja, Nigeria – The Senate has announced that national security challenges and the proposed State Police Bill will take centre stage during its emergency plenary session scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

The upper legislative chamber is expected to deliberate on a range of measures aimed at addressing the growing security concerns across the country, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes that have continued to threaten lives and property.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Yemi Adaramodu, disclosed the agenda for the special sitting in Abuja on Monday.

According to Adaramodu, the proposed State Police Bill remains one of the most significant legislative matters currently before the Senate and is expected to feature prominently during discussions.

Speaking on the forthcoming session, Adaramodu stated that lawmakers would focus on issues of urgent national importance, particularly those relating to security and public safety.

“The Senate will be considering matters of public interest, especially national security,” he said.

“The State Police legislation will undoubtedly be a priority issue.”

The bill, which has already passed second reading, is currently awaiting the report of the relevant committee before further legislative action can be taken.

Advocates of state policing argue that decentralising law enforcement powers would improve intelligence gathering, enhance community policing and enable state governments to respond more effectively to local security threats.

However, opponents have expressed concerns that state-controlled police formations could be misused by political officeholders for partisan purposes.

Adaramodu emphasized that the Senate remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture through legislative reforms and collaboration with other arms of government.

According to him, lawmakers are prepared to work closely with the executive branch and security stakeholders to address the country’s security challenges.

“The Senate is desirous of partnering with other arms of government in curbing the undesirable activities of bandits, terrorists and other peace-threatening marauders,” he stated.

The emergency plenary session was formally communicated to senators through a memo issued on June 15 by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo.

The notice indicated that the sitting was convened at the request of Senate President Godswill Akpabio to deliberate on matters considered critical to national stability and security.

The State Police Bill is among the key constitutional reform proposals currently before the National Assembly.

Nigeria presently operates a centralised policing system under the Nigeria Police Force, with law enforcement powers controlled by the Federal Government.

As insecurity continues to dominate national discourse, the Senate’s deliberations on the proposed legislation are expected to attract significant public attention and could shape future discussions on security reforms in Nigeria.
