Tension gripped the Permanent Site of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) in Plateau State on Tuesday after the headless body of a man was discovered within the institution’s premises.

Naija News understands that the assailants fled the scene with the victim’s severed head, prompting the university authorities to tighten security across the campus while police launched an investigation into the gruesome killing.

The incident reportedly occurred in a section of the university frequently used for farming, raising concerns among students, staff and residents of the campus community.

The Chief Security Officer of the University of Jos, Agama Tangni, confirmed the incident, stating that the deceased had no official affiliation with the institution.

“I can confirm that somebody was beheaded here. He is neither a student nor a staff member of the university,” Tangni said.

According to him, the victim was, however, well known within the area because he regularly visited the location to cultivate his farmland.

Tangni explained that the deceased usually arrived at the farm in the early hours of the morning, suggesting that the attackers may have been familiar with his routine.

“The identity of the deceased is known because that particular spot where he used to farm is where he was beheaded. He usually came there very early in the morning,” he stated.

The university security chief said preliminary observations indicated that the attackers may have deliberately planned the assault.

“I don’t know whether the assailants had been monitoring him, but from the look of things, they targeted him, beheaded him and went away with his severed head,” Tangni added.

He disclosed that the victim’s relatives had been notified of the incident, while the body had been evacuated to the mortuary of the Bingham University Teaching Hospital.

Tangni also confirmed that the university management had been briefed and was expected to issue an official communication to members of the university community.

The discovery of the headless body sparked anxiety among students and members of staff, particularly as the victim’s severed head had yet to be recovered.

Although the Plateau State Police Command had not released an official statement as of the time of filing this report, security personnel were reportedly deployed to strategic locations around the university’s permanent site to strengthen surveillance and reassure members of the campus community.

Investigators have commenced efforts to identify those responsible for the killing, determine the motive behind the attack and recover the victim’s missing head.

Authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations progress.
