The United Kingdom Parliament has announced plans to host Nigeria alongside several major economies, including Germany, Japan, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, and South Africa, for a high-level climate change discourse scheduled to take place during the 2026 London Climate Action Week.

The gathering is expected to provide a platform for lawmakers, investors, climate experts, and policymakers from across the world to discuss practical solutions to climate challenges, investment opportunities, and strategies for accelerating the global transition toward sustainable development.

The event also marks a significant milestone for Nigeria, which is preparing to host its first Climate Investment Summit from June 23 to June 26, 2026. The summit is expected to strengthen the country’s position in international climate diplomacy while attracting global attention to climate-related investments and development opportunities.

Former member of the House of Representatives and sponsor of Nigeria’s Climate Change Act 2021, Sam Onuigbo, disclosed the development in a statement released on Sunday. According to him, Nigeria is also poised to make history as he prepares to become the first African to lead GLOBE International, a global organization of legislators focused on environmental sustainability and climate governance.

The transition in leadership is expected to take place during the organization’s 35th anniversary celebration, which coincides with the London Climate Action Week.

According to an official invitation signed by GLOBE Legislators Chief Executive, Malini Mehra, Onuigbo will succeed Argentine parliamentarian Deputy MC Juan Carlos Villalonga as President of GLOBE Legislators.

The leadership transition is regarded as a landmark moment for Africa’s participation in global climate governance. Onuigbo’s emergence is expected to further strengthen the continent’s voice in international discussions surrounding climate resilience, sustainable development, and energy transition.

Over the years, Onuigbo has gained recognition for his advocacy on environmental protection and climate action. In 2023, he was named among the Top 30 Global Climate Action Leaders by the New York-based Business Insider. He was also inducted into the National Assembly Most Valuable Parliamentarian Hall of Fame for the 2019–2023 legislative cycle and honored as a Worthy Ambassador of the House of Representatives.

As part of the activities lined up for the anniversary celebration, Onuigbo is expected to deliver his inaugural address during GLOBE’s 35th Anniversary Reception at the United Kingdom Parliament on June 24.

The event will bring together lawmakers from different political backgrounds and regions of the world to deliberate on pressing climate issues and emerging policy solutions.

The theme of the anniversary event, “Building Political Resilience and Public Consensus for Climate Action at a Time of Severe Domestic and Geopolitical Challenges,” reflects growing concerns over the impact of climate change amid global economic and political uncertainties.

Organizers say discussions will focus on climate cooperation, green investments, innovation for net-zero economies, climate risk management, nature restoration, ocean conservation, and strategies for mobilizing society-wide climate action.

London Climate Action Week has become one of the world’s leading climate events, attracting ministers, legislators, business executives, investors, academics, civil society groups, and local government leaders.

This year’s edition is expected to surpass the more than 700 climate-related events hosted across London in 2025. Major discussions and summits on climate investment, sustainable cities, energy technology, and net-zero implementation are scheduled to take place at iconic venues including the UK Parliament, Buckingham Palace, Kew Gardens, the Globe Theatre, Guildhall, and Mansion House.

Observers believe Nigeria’s prominent role in the upcoming engagements highlights the country’s growing influence in international climate policy and its commitment to advancing sustainable economic growth through climate-conscious development initiatives.
